Introducing the Family Tree Builder: Managing Your Family Ancestry

Introducing the Family Tree Builder: Managing Your Family Ancestry

The Family Tree Builder allows users to create and interactively view the extent of their uploaded familial relations by genetics, adoption and marriage.

Locating the Family Tree Builder

You can find the “Family Tree Builder” in the left navigation panel.

      Collapsed Navigation Panel View

      Open Navigation Panel View

Once you are inside the Family Tree Builder, the navigation panel will disappear automatically. If you wish to navigate to the Home page again, just click the small left arrow on the top left corner of the page next to the Heirloom logo.

Navigating the Family Tree Builder

In the bottom right corner you will find three purple buttons.

The ‘+’ plus button for zooming in.

The ‘-’ minus button for zooming out.

The ‘O’ centering button to locate your profile back to the centre.

You have three ways to view your Family Tree:

      1. The “Full” view shows all relations by genetics, adoption and marriage.

      2. The “Bloodline” view shows only profiles that have a genetic relation to you.

      3. The “Direct Line” view shows only you and your line of ancestors (i.e. you, your genetic parents, your genetic grandparents, etc.). If you have any descendants, your partner will be included along with them.

For more information, you can locate the encircled ‘i’ next to these view options, click on it, and a detailed description of each view will appear for further clarification.

Creating a Family Member

To create a new Family Member profile, you need to click on the profile icon that you want to add a related profile to. There will be a pop up on the top left corner of your Family Tree view, giving you three options for the selected profile.

  1. “+ Add a relative”
  2. “Add Keepsake”
  3. “View details”

If you need to return to the original unselected view, click on the background and it will deselect the profile and the pop up will disappear.

Step 1

To add a relative, select the top button and you will have 3 types of relationships to specify: parent, child, or partner.

Step 2

After selecting the relationship type, you have the option to connect another existing member profile to this relationship, or you can click on “+ Create a member” at the top of the list.

Step 3

Fill in as much of the information you know of the member you’re adding. If this person is related generations back, you can still create a profile for them with limited information.

You have the same field of basic information for each relationship type you are creating, such as:
  1. A profile picture
  2. First name
  3. Last name
  4. Adopted Status
  5. Place of Birth
  6. Date of Birth
  7. Date of Death (if deceased)

If you have created a Child Relation, you will have the option to select a second parent. You can do this by clicking on the appropriate profile in the Family Tree View, and lastly confirm the adopted status of that filial relation too.

However, if you are creating a Partner type profile, you won’t see the adopted status, but you’ll have the additional information of marital status, as follows:

  1. Marital Status (select None, Married or Divorced)
  2. Date of Marriage (if married)
  3. Date of Divorce (if divorced)

Managing Family Members & Relations

When editing a Family Member's profile or relation, you will need to click on their profile in the Family Tree Builder and select the "View details" button.

From there you can edit their information, edit their relations (found at the top), or remove the profile entirely.

Don't forget to click ‘Save’ after filling in or editing your information.
